NIHR Chairperson’s Statement on the anniversary of the National Action Charter (NAC)

Eng. Ali Ahmed Al Derazi, Chairperson of National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), emphasised the institution's crucial role in promoting and consolidating a culture of human rights, achieving justice and equality, and protecting individual rights.

 On the 23rd anniversary of the endorsement of the National Action Charter (NAC), Al Derazi said the NIHR was committed to achieving the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa regarding promoting the status of human rights, as stated by the Action Charter

Al Derazi outlined the National Institution for Human Rights' various functions, including raising awareness, providing education, monitoring, legislative recommendations and consultation, participating in formulating the national human rights plan, and promoting a culture of human rights.

He highlighted the NIHR’s significant achievements, including receiving the Chaillot Award for the Promotion of Human Rights in the Gulf Cooperation Council region in 2014 from the European Union, and being the first national human rights institution to obtain the updated ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Certificate from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The NIHR was also the the first non-profit organisation to join the United Nations Global Compact Initiative, in recognition of its commitment to the ten principles of the Global Compact, including human rights, environmental protection, worker rights, and combating corruption.

He pointed out that the NIHR has recently launched the position of Commissioner for Children's Rights in 2023, concerned with protecting and promoting the best interests of the child.

Al Derazi emphasised the NIHR’s commitment to promoting human rights and basic freedoms, stating that it will continue to work diligently towards achieving the principles of the National Action Charter and contributing to the progress and prosperity of Bahrain.
